What is the HMRC app?

For anyone who wants to check or manage their tax, National Insurance or Child Benefit on a phone.

The HMRC app is the official app from HM Revenue and Customs for managing your tax and some benefits on your phone.

  • It is available on iOS and Android, from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
  • You sign in with your HMRC online services details, or create new ones in the app.
  • After that, you can use a 6-digit PIN, fingerprint or face recognition.
  • You can check your tax code, National Insurance number, Self Assessment and State Pension.
  • You can also claim refunds, make payments and apply for Child Benefit.

What the HMRC app is

The HMRC app is the official app from HM Revenue and Customs, the UK tax office. It lets you check and manage much of your tax on your phone, instead of signing in on a computer.

It works on iPhones (iOS) and Android phones. You get it from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

What you can do in the app

Your tax and National Insurance

  • check your tax code
  • find your National Insurance number
  • see your employment history
  • check gaps in your National Insurance record and pay to fill them
  • estimate your take-home pay with the tax calculator
  • claim a tax refund

Self Assessment

  • see your Self Assessment reference (UTR) and how much tax you owe
  • make payments and set payment reminders
  • tell HMRC if you do not need to send a tax return

Benefits and savings

  • check your State Pension summary
  • apply for and manage Child Benefit
  • check if you can get Help to Save, and manage your account

Your details

  • update your name or address
  • choose how HMRC contacts you
  • track forms and letters you have sent to HMRC

How to sign in

  1. Download the HMRC app from your phone's app store.
  2. Sign in with the details you use for HMRC online services. This is either a Government Gateway user ID and password, or GOV.UK One Login (email address and password).
  3. If you do not have sign-in details, you can create new ones in the app.
  4. After setting up, you can open the app with a 6-digit PIN, your fingerprint or face recognition.

Things to know

  • Same app across the UK. It covers people in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Your tax code will start with S if you pay Scottish Income Tax, or C if you pay Welsh rates.
  • Accessibility. HMRC publishes separate accessibility statements for the iOS and Android apps, explaining how they work with screen readers and other tools.
