Other ways to contact HMRC

You can often sort things out without waiting on the phone:

  • Digital assistant (webchat): answers questions on PAYE, tax codes, refunds, Self Assessment, VAT and more. It can pass you to a human adviser.
  • Your personal tax account or the HMRC app: check your tax code, National Insurance record and Child Benefit payments.
  • Post: for Income Tax and Self Assessment, write to HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1AS. Child Benefit post goes to Child Benefit Office, PO Box 1, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE88 1AA.
  • X (Twitter): @HMRCcustomers. Do not post personal details.

Watch out for fake calls

HMRC will never leave a voicemail threatening legal action, and it will never threaten arrest. If a call feels wrong, hang up and ring the number on this page yourself.
