How backdating works
When you claim Pension Credit, DWP can backdate it by up to 3 months. This means your first payment can include up to 3 months of money, as long as you met the rules during that time.
It cannot go back further than 3 months. So if you have been eligible for a year and only claim now, you lose the earlier 9 months. The sooner you claim, the less you lose.
How much backdating could be worth
These examples use the 2026/27 Guarantee Credit rate. It tops up weekly income to £238 for a single person, or £363.25 for a couple.
| Example | Weekly Pension Credit | 3 months backdated (13 weeks) |
|---|---|---|
| Single, income £218 a week | £20.00 | £260.00 |
| Single, income £184.90 a week | £53.10 | £690.30 |
| Couple, income £340 a week | £23.25 | £302.25 |
These are simple examples. Your amount could be higher if you get extra amounts for disability, caring or housing costs. Savings over £10,000 count as some income.
What you need for a backdated claim
- Your National Insurance number.
- Details of your income, savings and investments now.
- Details of your income, savings and investments at the date you want to backdate to.

If your circumstances changed in the last 3 months, write down what changed and when. For example, a pension that started or savings you spent.
How to apply
- Online. You can apply online if you have already claimed your State Pension.
- By phone. Call 0800 99 1234, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Relay UK: 18001 then 0800 99 1234.

You can apply up to 4 months before you reach State Pension age. Applying early helps you avoid gaps.
Why backdating matters for other help
Pension Credit can open the door to other support. GOV.UK lists Housing Benefit, a Council Tax Reduction, Cold Weather Payments, a free TV licence if you are 75 or over, and help with NHS dental treatment, glasses and hospital travel. Ask your council about backdating Housing Benefit too.
If you disagree with the decision
You can ask DWP to look at the decision again. This is called mandatory reconsideration.
If you live in Northern Ireland
The rules are the same. You can get up to 3 months of Pension Credit in your first payment. Apply online, by phone or by post to the Northern Ireland Pension Centre. The date your form is received is the date that counts.
