Before you book
Check these things first, or you may not be able to book or sit the test.
- A provisional driving licence. You need one to book. You book using the licence number.
- Your age. For a car, you can take the theory test from 17. You can take it from 16 if you get, or have applied for, the higher rate of the mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
- Where you live. You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the 12 months before the day of your test.
- Extra help. If you have a reading difficulty, disability or health condition, say so when you book. You may be able to get support on the day.
How to book, step by step
- Have your UK driving licence number, an email address and a debit or credit card ready.
- Go to the official GOV.UK theory test booking service.
- Choose the type of test (for example, car or motorcycle).
- Pick a test centre, date and time.
- Pay the fee and wait for your email confirmation.
How much it costs
| Test | Fee |
|---|---|
| Car | £23 |
| Motorcycle | £23 |
| Lorry and bus part 1a (multiple choice) | £26 |
| Lorry and bus part 1b (hazard perception) | £11 |
| Lorry and bus part 2 (case studies) | £23 |
Changing or cancelling your test
You can move to an earlier or later date, or change test centre, online.
You must give at least 3 full working days' notice, or you will have to pay again. You may still get a refund at short notice for things you could not avoid, such as illness, a death in the family, school exams or a stolen licence. You will need proof.
On the day
Take your UK photocard driving licence. If you forget it, your test will be cancelled and you will not get your money back. If you still have an old paper licence, take a valid passport too. If your name has changed, take proof, such as a marriage certificate or deed poll.
After the test
The car theory test has two parts: multiple choice and hazard perception. You need 43 out of 50 in the multiple choice part and 44 out of 75 in hazard perception. You get your result at the test centre.
- If you pass, you get a pass certificate number. It lasts 2 years, so you must pass your practical driving test in that time.
- If you fail, you must wait at least 3 working days, then book and take the full test again, even if you passed one part.

If you live in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland uses a separate booking service run by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA). You can book online or by phone. You need a UK driving licence with a Northern Ireland address. You must give DVA 3 clear working days' notice to move or cancel. From 1 October 2026, people with a GB provisional licence cannot book a car or motorcycle theory test in Northern Ireland. They need a Northern Ireland provisional licence instead.
