How do I book my driving test?
For learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales who want to book a practical driving test.

Book online yourself; your instructor isn't allowed to book for you. You'll usually need to pass your theory test first.
- New appointments are released 24 weeks ahead, at 6am every Monday.
- Earlier slots appear when others cancel; there's no waiting list.
- The test costs £62 to £75.
- You must have lived in Great Britain for at least 185 days in the last 12 months.

What you need to book
- your UK driving licence number
- a credit or debit card
- your driving instructor's personal reference number, if you want to check they are free
For most tests you must pass your theory test first. You must also have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the 12 months before your test.
How to book
- Go to the "Book your driving test" service on GOV.UK. It is open from 6am to 11:40pm.
- Choose the type of test (for example car).
- Enter your licence number and details.
- Pick a test centre and a date and time.
- Pay with your card and keep the booking reference.
It is against the law to book a car driving test for someone else. Your instructor cannot book, change or cancel it for you.

Finding a date
- New appointments are added 24 weeks ahead, released at 6am every Monday.
- Cancelled slots can appear at any time during the week.
- There is no waiting list or cancellation list, so check the service regularly.
Changing your test

Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not. After 2 changes, you have to cancel and book again. If you move to an evening or weekend slot you pay the difference. If you move to a weekday slot you get the difference back.
Cancelling your test
- You get an automatic refund if you give 10 full working days' notice for a car test.
- With less notice, you may still get a refund for illness or injury, a bereavement, an exam, or a stolen licence. You need to send evidence to DVSA.
- You can cancel up to the time your test starts, but without a refund.
