How your payment date is set
Universal Credit is paid once a month, for the month just gone. Each month is called an assessment period. Your first one starts on the day you claim. You are usually paid 7 days after each assessment period ends, then on the same date every month.
| Step | Example: claim made on Tuesday 10 March 2026 |
|---|---|
| First assessment period | 10 March to 9 April 2026 |
| First payment | Thursday 16 April 2026 |
| Next assessment period | 10 April to 9 May 2026 |
| Next payment | 16 May 2026, which is a Saturday, so paid Friday 15 May |
| Usual payment date after that | the 16th of each month |
This is why the first payment takes about 5 weeks. If you cannot wait, you can ask for an advance on your first payment in your online account.
Payment dates and bank holidays
If your payment date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, you are paid on the working day before. Here is how the end of 2026 works in England and Wales:
| Your usual payment date | Why it moves | When you are paid |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 25 December 2026 | Christmas Day | Thursday 24 December |
| Saturday 26 or Sunday 27 December | Weekend | Thursday 24 December |
| Monday 28 December 2026 | Boxing Day (substitute day) | Thursday 24 December |
| Friday 1 January 2027 | New Year's Day | Thursday 31 December |
An early payment does not mean extra money. Your next payment still comes on your usual date, so the gap feels longer. Plan for this over Christmas.
Scotland also has St Andrew's Day on Monday 30 November 2026 and a substitute day for 2 January on Monday 4 January 2027. Northern Ireland has St Patrick's Day on Wednesday 17 March 2027.
How much you get each time
The amount can change every month. It is worked out from your circumstances in that assessment period, including:
- your earnings, and the date your employer pays you
- changes like a new child, a move or a new partner
- deductions, for example to repay an advance or an overpayment
Check your statement in your online account to see how each payment was worked out. It also shows when your next payment will be.
Couples and housing costs
If you claim as a couple, you get one payment each month for your household. Any money for rent is usually paid to you, and you pay your landlord. If you struggle with one monthly payment, you can ask for an Alternative Payment Arrangement. This could mean rent goes straight to your landlord.
If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland
Scotland: you can choose to be paid once or twice a month. If you choose twice, your first payment is for a full month. After that, each monthly amount is split into 2 payments, usually 15 days apart. You can also choose to have your housing amount paid to your landlord.
Northern Ireland: Universal Credit is paid twice a month, on the same dates each month. The first payment is half your monthly amount, with the rest a couple of weeks later. Your first payment comes about 5 weeks after you claim. Any money for housing costs is paid straight to your landlord.
