Can I get a TV licence discount if I'm blind?

For people who are registered blind or severely sight impaired.

Yes. You can get 50% off your TV licence if you, or someone you live with, is registered blind or severely sight impaired. The licence must be in the blind person's name.

  • You'll need a certificate from your council or ophthalmologist.
  • Send a copy to TV Licensing's Blind Concession Group.

How much you save

The blind concession gives you 50% off the TV licence. The standard licence fee shown on GOV.UK is £180 a year for colour and £60.50 for black and white.

Who qualifies

You can get the discount if either:

  • you are registered blind or severely sight impaired
  • you live with someone who is registered blind or severely sight impaired

The licence must be in the name of the person who is registered blind. If someone else in the home holds the licence now, you will need to transfer it into the blind person's name first. You can do this online with your licence number, or by contacting TV Licensing.

What you need

A certificate from your local council or an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) that shows the person is registered blind or severely sight impaired.

How to apply

  1. Transfer the licence into the blind person's name, if needed.
  2. Make a copy of the certificate. Do not send the original.
  3. Include your licence renewal notice if you have one, and a cheque or postal order for the licence.
  4. Add your name, address, phone number and TV licence number.
  5. Post it to: TV Licensing, Blind Concession Group, Bristol, BS98 1TL.

Other TV licence discounts

The blind concession is not the only one. You may get:

  • a free licence if you are 75 or over and get Pension Credit, or live with a partner who gets it. This covers everyone at your address.
  • a licence for £7.50 if you live in an eligible care home, supported housing or sheltered housing and are retired and over 60, or disabled. Your housing manager applies.
