Key facts
- Return the form within 1 month
- PIP carries on during the review
- Award can rise, fall or stop
- Challenge within 1 month
Deadlines
- Return the PIP review form within 1 month. If you need more time, call the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433 before the deadline.
- If you disagree with the result, ask for a mandatory reconsideration within one month of the date on the decision letter.
Why reviews happen
Your first PIP award lasts between 9 months and 10 years. The length depends on whether your needs are likely to change. Your award letter tells you when your claim will be reviewed. A review checks you are still getting the right amount.
What happens, step by step
- You get a letter with a "Personal Independence Payment review" form and notes on how to fill it in.
- You fill in the form and send it back within 1 month.
- You send new evidence. Include any information you have not already given DWP.
- A health professional may get in touch. They might call you, write to you or ask you to an assessment. The assessment can be face to face, by phone or by video.
- You get a decision letter saying what happens to your PIP.
You keep getting PIP while all this happens.
Filling in the form
- Describe how your condition affects you now, not when you first claimed.
- Say what has changed, and what has stayed the same.
- Give real examples of tasks you find hard, how long they take, and the help you need.
- Send copies of recent letters or reports that show how your condition affects you.
What the result can be
| Outcome | What it means |
|---|---|
| Increased | You need more help than before, so you get a higher rate or an extra part |
| Same | Your award carries on as it is |
| Reduced | You get a lower rate, or only one part |
| Stopped | DWP decides you no longer qualify |
The 2026/27 rates are £76.70 or £114.60 a week for daily living, and £30.30 or £80.00 a week for mobility.
If you disagree with the decision
Ask DWP for a mandatory reconsideration within one month. You can do this by phone, by letter or on form CRMR1. If DWP does not change its decision, you can appeal to an independent tribunal. Both steps are free.
Citizens Advice can help you for free with the review form or a challenge.
Do not wait for a review to report changes
You must tell the PIP enquiry line straight away if, for example, you need more or less help, go into hospital or a care home, or plan to go abroad for more than 4 weeks. If you do not, you may have to pay money back.
If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland
- Scotland: PIP has been replaced by Adult Disability Payment, run by Social Security Scotland.
- Northern Ireland: the PIP Centre sends you a review form. Your PIP carries on during the review, and not every review needs an assessment.
