Key facts

What the Global Talent visa is

The Global Talent visa is for people who are leaders, or could become leaders, in one of three fields:

  • academia or research
  • arts and culture
  • digital technology

You must be 18 or over. If you get the visa, you can live and work in the UK for up to 5 years at a time.

Two ways to qualify

1. Win an eligible prize. If you are the named winner of a prize on the official list of prestigious prizes, you do not need an endorsement. You go straight to the visa application. Other prizes from the same organisations do not count. The prize itself must be on the list.

2. Get an endorsement. Everyone else must first be endorsed. An endorsement is an official confirmation that you are a leader or potential leader in your field. You apply for the endorsement first, then for the visa.

How much it costs

RouteEndorsementVisaTotal
Prize routeNone£766£766
Endorsement route£561£205£766

You also pay the healthcare surcharge. This is usually £1,035 for each year, for each person applying. Each partner or child also pays the £766 fee.

Example: you apply alone for a 5 year visa through the endorsement route. You pay £561 for the endorsement and £205 for the visa. The healthcare surcharge is 5 x £1,035 = £5,175. Your total is £5,941.

How long it takes

Once you have applied, proved your identity and sent your documents, you will usually get a decision:

  • within 3 weeks if you apply from outside the UK
  • within 8 weeks if you apply from inside the UK

You may be able to pay for a faster decision.

Switching from another visa

You can usually switch to this visa from inside the UK. You cannot switch if you are here on, for example, a visit visa, a short-term student visa, a Parent of a Child Student visa, a seasonal worker or domestic worker visa, or on immigration bail. You would need to leave and apply from abroad.

If you are on a Student visa, you must have finished your course, or have been studying full time for a PhD for at least 24 months.

Your partner and children

Your husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner and your children under 18 can apply to join you. An unmarried partner usually needs to have lived with you for at least 2 years.

Your partner and children can work (except as a sportsperson or coach) and study. They cannot claim most benefits (public funds) or the State Pension.

Extending and settling

You can extend the visa for 1 to 5 years at a time. After 3 or 5 years, depending on your field, you may be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain. That lets you live, work and study here for as long as you like, and claim benefits if you are eligible.
