How your band sets your bill

Each council sets a Band D charge every year. The other bands are a fixed fraction of it.

Example in England or Wales. If your council's Band D charge is £2,000 (example figure only):

  • Band A: £2,000 x 6/9 = £1,333.33
  • Band H: £2,000 x 18/9 = £4,000
  • Band I (Wales only): £2,000 x 21/9 = £4,666.67

Example in Scotland. If Band D is £1,500 (example figure only):

  • Band A: £1,500 x 240/360 = £1,000
  • Band H: £1,500 x 882/360 = £3,675

Your actual bill can then be lower if you get a discount, such as 25% off if you live alone, or Council Tax Reduction.

What can change your band

The Valuation Office looks at size, layout, character, location and use. Your band can change if:

  • the home is split into flats or joined with another home
  • it is extended with a self-contained annexe
  • there are big changes in the area, like a new road
  • it has been made bigger, in which case it may move to a higher band when it is next sold

If you think your band is wrong, you can challenge it with evidence, such as similar nearby homes in a lower band.
